Dutch Spotted Sheep
We are proud to announce that we are the second farm in the USA to have these amazing sheep from the UK. This amazing breed is relatively new to the UK but has been around on mainland Europe since approximately 1800.
There are over 1000 breeders in mainland Europe, the majority of whom are in the Netherlands, but there are registered flocks in Germany, France, Spain, and Ireland in addition to those in the UK.
Dutch Spotted Sheep thrive on a grass-based system producing a quality meaty carcass. They are light boned with a large framework. Known for a high killing out percentage (the weight of the carcass in relation to the weight of the live animal), lean meat, and an exceptional taste. Ewes are easy lambing with high yields of plentiful milk. Lambs are on their feet quickly after birth and display a strong suckle reflex. Mature weight: females 165lbs – 210lbs, males 255lbs – 300lbs. They are known for their ease of handling and inquisitive nature.
Texel breeders, you can cross the Dutch Spotted with your Texels to produce a high quality lamb that doesn’t need as much assistance at birth because they don’t have the square head, do not require grain to finish out and get to market size quickly.
Our new flock……..
Our Dutch Spotted started as embryos in the UK and traveled to the US frozen in a nitrogen tank. From there they went to a veterinary facility that implanted them into surrogate ewes. After 45 days the surrogates received an ultrasound to see the results and we prepared for the new lambs arrival.
Our new arrivals made the grand appearance a few weeks ago and are growing rapidly. Please say hello to Hastings and Humphrey in the photo above. They are already eating hay and pasture and have even tried some of their moms feed ration.
